Epic Communications, Inc. (Epicom) Introduces Three New Linearized Power Amplifiers for 802.11b/g and a/b/g WiFi Products Optimized for Low Current Handheld and High Power Access Point Applications

 

HSINCHU, Taiwan, July 12, 2005 - Epicom announced today three linearized power amplifiers (PAs) for WiFi 802.11b/g and a/b/g applications featuring low current (PA2418), high power (PA2420), and dual-band (PA7706) options to address current IT-based applications in WLAN as well as emerging embedded wireless applications in handheld devices such as WiFi-enabled VoIP phones. The Taiwan-based company is currently supplying production quantities of PAs to major manufacturers with over 20 design wins since launching its products in 2004.

Epicoms linearized PAs are designed with a novel linearizing technique (patent-pending) that provides improved power efficiency and greater range for WiFi products while maintaining data accuracy. These PA chips are easily adoptable in current and new designs and are compatible with all market available 802.11b/g and a/b/g chipsets from the leading wireless chip companies.

The PA2418 is a two-stage, 2.4 GHz linearized power amplifier designed and optimized for ultra low power consumption in handheld applications. It has the lowest power consumption among all 2.4GHz PAs currently available on the market, delivering up to +16dBm output power with an error vector magnitude (EVM) of less than 3% at an operating current of merely 55mA when biased at 3.3Volts, making it the optimum PA choice for any battery life sensitive handheld application such as PDA, Wi-Fi-enabled VoIP and smart phones.

The PA2420 is a high-efficiency three-stage, 2.4GHz linearized power amplifier optimized for WLAN 802.11b/g access point (AP) and potential WiMax applications. PA2420 has the highest efficiency among all 2.4GHz PA currently available on the market, delivering up to +21dBm output power with an EVM of less than 3% and operating current of 190mA when biased at 3.3Volts. This device is specifically aimed for access point applications where high output power and high linearity are required.


The PA2420 and PA2418 2.4GHz PA chips are supplied in a miniature QFN 3mm by 3mm package.

The PA7706 dual-band power amplifier is optimized for 802.11a/b/g WLAN applications. The device features two power amplifiers in a single package, delivering up to +19dBm of output power with an EVM of less than 3% and operating current of 135mA when biased at 3.3Volts for 2.4GHz applications,and up to +18dBm of output power with an EVM of less than 3% and operating current of 200mA when biased at 3.3Volts across the 4.9GHz-5.8GHz band. The dual band PA7706 chip is supplied in a 4mm by 4mm QFN package.
