Epic Communications, Inc. (Epicom) Introduces Four Fully Integrated Compact RF Front-End Modules for 802.11b/g and a/b/g WiFi Products with Smallest Size, Lowest Current and Highest Efficiency
HSINCHU, Taiwan, July 12, 2005 - Epicom announced today a new family of fourcompact RF front-end modules for 802.11b/g and 802.11a/b/g WiFi products with the smallest size, lowest current and highest efficiency in the industry. The RF Front-End modules (FEM) employ Epicoms patented linearized power amplifiers fully-integrated with T/R diversity switch, low noise amplifier, filters, diplexers, power detector, and all biasing and matching circuitry. The RF FEMs replace over 30 discrete and IC components in a miniature package, requiring practically no external components when used in various applications, such as card bus, mini-PCI, PCI-Express, USB, and Compact Flash, SDIO, SPI designs. These modules are easily adoptable by OEMs, ODMs, and CMs, increasing yield and reducing cost by providing pre-screened and guaranteed performance. The Taiwan-based company is currently supplying production quantities of its PA and FEM products to major manufacturers with an accumulated shipment of over 7 millions units since launching its products in late 2004.
The FM2422 is a fully integrated low-current RF FEM designed for 2.4 GHz dual-mode 802.11b/g WiFi applications where low operating current is desired for long battery life and ultra compact size such as handheld PDAs and WiFi-enabled VoIP phones. This device features an output power of +15dBm at the antenna port with an error vector magnitude (EVM) of less than 4% and operating current of only 55mA when biased at 3.3Volts.
The FM2423 is the higher power version of FM2422 which provides output power of up to +18dBm with EVM of less than 4% and operating current of 150mA when biased at 3.3Volts, which gives the best overall power efficiency and is most suitable for IT-based 802.11b/g WLAN applications such as USB, Mini-PCI, and PCI-Express cards.
For dual-band 802.11a/b/g applications, the FM7704 provides similar low current operation at both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz. The FM7704 is a fully integrated low-current RF FEM designed for 802.11a/b/g WiFi applications such as PDA, smart and WiFi-enabled VoIP phones. This device features an output power of +15dBm at the antenna port with an EVM of less than 5% and operating current of 60mA when biased at 3.3Volts for 2.4GHz and an output power of +15dBm with EVM less than 5% and operating current of 90mA when biased at 3.3Volts across the 4.9GHz to 5.8GHz band.
The FM7705 is the higher power version of FM7704 and is most suitable for IT-based 802.11a/b/g applications such as PCI-Express cards. This device features an output power of +18dBm at the antenna port with an EVM of less than 5% and operating current of 130mA when biased at 3.3Volts for 2.4GHz and an output power of +17dBm with EVM less than 5% and operating current of 170mA when biased at 3.3Volts across the 4.9GHz to 5.8GHz band.
All Epicom RF FEMs utilize the most advanced system-on-chip (SoC) MMIC technology to integrate all analog active and passive components in a low cost standard QFN package, measuring 4mm by 4mm by 0.8mm for single band 802.11b/g applications (FM2422 and FM2423), and 5mm by 5mm by 0.8mm for dual band 802.11a/b/g applications (FM7704 and FM7705). These are the smallest footprint FEMs for both 802.11b/g and 802.11a/b/g applications available on the market.
